The present work, made in honor of the poet during the "Semana de Autor" organized by Casa de las Americas in 2014, features her poem titled "Now I too am among the others." In reading the poem, we learn that the "others" here refers to the world of adults, and that the speaker, no longer a carefree child, has realized that she is now one of them. Designed and illustrated by Elizabeth Valero Molina, the broadside is folded, wrapped in string, and housed in a handmade box, as if trying to preserve something ephemeral yet very precious – perhaps a metaphor for childhood itself. Like other Vigía productions, this work has a wonderful handmade aesthetic and incorporates a variety of materials and textures.

Ediciones Vigía was founded in 1985 by Cuban poet Alfredo Zaldívar, and book artist Rolando Estévez, who became the artistic director of the press. According to an interview with Estévez and Zaldívar published in the Michigan Quarterly Review, "Ediciones Vigía emerged out of the need of a group of artists of the city to see their work, which they valued as literature, in print. We did not have a preconceived idea about what the volumes would look like. Our resources were scarce: a mimeograph machine that someone from a press was able to lend us, and a typewriter -- also borrowed -- because we owned neither. These are the only two machines we have used in the history of Vigía. More than anything, we use our hands and our imagination." For 40 years Vigía has maintained this spirit of independence and "make do" attitude, crafting its limited editions from a variety of items that include recycled materials such as fabric scraps, cardboard, yarn, and even sawdust, as well as mimeographs, prints, and paintings. Each book is constructed by hand and thus unique. To quote Zaldívar again, "They are exclusive editions; to own a Vigía volume is somewhat of a privilege." (1028)

Further reading: Behar, "Handmade in Cuba: Rolando Estévez and the Beautiful Books of Ediciones Vigía"; Alegria, "Vigia: The Endless Publications of Matanzas," in Michigan Quarterly Review: Vol. 33, No. 4, pp. 829-35.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0873/5978/3212/files/1028_01_0c7fbb6b-54ba-4ffc-8a59-590ec400fb80.jpg?v=1757528519
literature-moore-george-avowals-1919
(LITERATURE). There, he became immersed in the artistic and literary movements of the time, befriending writers like Émile Zola and gaining exposure to French realism and naturalism. Though many of his works were considered controversial due to their candid treatment of "amoral" themes such as same-sex relationships and prostitution, Moore became known as a daring and innovative writer offering a fresh, modern voice and influencing a wave of up-and-coming authors, including James Joyce. In fact, the present work contains the finished drawings of a single student over three years at the École Imperiale d’Arts et Métiers in Angers, including illustrations of ornaments, architecture, geometry, building surveys, machine parts and assembly, topography, hydraulics, and complex mechanics, each executed with needle-thin lines, flawless text, and impeccable attention to detail. A number of illustrations contain pale washes of color to help define shapes and sectors, but three display more accomplished watercolors, including two topographical illustrations and a drawing of an "Appareil d'Alimentation des Tenders" (equipment used to funnel water into a wagon-tank that supplies steam locomotives). The drawings progress from the simple, such as architectural ornamentation, to the complex, including entire hydraulic systems and drilling equipment viewed from multiple angles. The illustrations are all signed by the student, V. Dufaux, and some are also signed by the supervising professor.

In addition to its artistic and technical value, this portfolio is also a visual record of the prevailing pedagogical methods and attitudes toward the acquisition of knowledge in an era of rapid industrialization. As we can see from the illustrations in the present work, mathematics—especially descriptive geometry—played a central role in this type of education, as did the belief that "drawing was knowing," as noted by Brechenmacher. In other words, theory and lectures, while important, were only part of the equation; manual practice—training both the eye and the hand through the practice of drawing—became an essential part of technical education in the 19th century.

The first École d'Arts et Metiers was founded in 1780 by the Duc de la Rochefoucauld-Liancourt, with the purpose of educating the children of cavalry officers. Under Napoleon, the school expanded to include two additional campuses and began turning out skilled draughtsmen and engineers, responding to a growing need for technical expertise and innovation the military and industrial sectors. Although we have been unable to find any biographical information about our student, Victor Dufaux, we can assume that he must have attended courses around 1860 based on the signature of Professor Deries on several leaves. Deries' name is listed as a professor at the École in the "Annuaire des Artistes et Amateurs," published in 1860. Notes on some of the leaves here indicate that our artist took her sketchbook all over the city, including locations in Harlem, the Bronx, Yonkers, and Spuyten Duyvil. She seems to have been especially drawn to busy street scenes and urban architecture, but there are also portraits of people sitting at cafes or dozing on the train, and even one still life. Malta was affiliated with the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project, a Depression-era initiative that employed visual artists and craftsmen, and established numerous community art centers. She seems to have been associated with the Harlem Community Art Center in particular—either as a teacher or a student—where she must have been acquainted with printmaker Riva Helfond. A pioneer of silkscreen printing, Helfond was responsible for turning some of Malta's works into prints known as "serigraphs." The two women were among the artists featured at MoMA's "Color Prints Under Ten Dollars" in November 1940, an exhibition staged in connection with Art Week "to stimulate the public's interest in buying American art at moderate prices." In addition to original art and serigraph prints, Malta's output also includes limited edition lithographs and etchings. Her work can be found at institutions such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, and the Met.
