Many children were separated from their families during mass evacuations, bombings, and destruction, while others lost their parents to combat, disease, or famine. Having just come out of World War II and following 35 years of Japanese occupation, Korea had few resources to spare, and neither North nor South were equipped to care for their most vulnerable. As such, each side came up with a very different way of dealing with the dilemma: the South, aided by organizations from the United States and other Western nations, established orphanages and supported international adoptions; the North, led by Kim Il Sung, sent orphans to countries in Eastern Europe's socialist bloc, including Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and East Germany.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Candara',sans-serif; mso-no-proof: yes;\"\u003eThe first North Korean orphans arrived in Poland in 1951, and thousands more followed over the next few years. Most accounts show that these resettled children were well cared for by their host countries, living in communal settings among their peers and receiving health care and bilingual education. Over time, genuine bonds grew between Korean and European classmates and teachers, and there are even several documented cases of North Korean teachers marrying Eastern Europeans. In 1956, Kim Il Sung recalled all children and teachers back to North Korea, with the last group leaving Europe in 1959. As the country became more and more isolated and secretive, we know nothing about the lives and fates of those pictured here.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Candara',sans-serif; mso-no-proof: yes;\"\u003eWritten in pencil on the back of these photos are notes describing the subjects as \"Chinese orphans in Czechoslovakia,\" but everything about them suggests that they are, in fact, North Korean. Based on the architecture and statue observed in the background of some of these images, we can almost certainly identify the location as Castle Líšno in former Czechoslovakia. The first 200 orphans, aged between 9-15 years, arrived at Líšno in 1952; judging by their appearance in these images, the children pictured here were probably among the youngest, and the uniform haircuts suggest that these photos were taken shortly after their arrival at Líšno. Other details of interest include the medals worn by several of the boys, and several Caucasian women dressed in white uniforms playing with some of the girls in the background. One of the photos depicts four men in suits and one woman in a knee-length skirt--presumably North Korean teachers that were sent to help educate the children and foster national identity and obedience to the state. These photographs were likely taken for propaganda purposes, although we have no further information about how or where they might have been used.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family: 'Candara',sans-serif; mso-no-proof: yes;\"\u003eOur research shows that relatively few images and records of this unique cross-cultural exchange have been properly preserved or identified, making these images important documentary evidence for the study of Korean history, Cold War politics, and adoption studies. Visscher, a medical doctor who worked for various aid groups around the world over the course of nearly five decades. The photos here capture her time in India and Bangladesh between 1972-74, very soon after the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War and the genocide that targeted Bengalis in what was then East Pakistan, resulting in millions of refugees and displaced peoples. The first album of 136 photographs primarily shows relief work in Bangladesh during 1972-73. Pictured here are workers with the International Rescue Committee and the humanitarian organization Concern, as well as many the many patients--mainly women and children--who benefited from food and medical programs. After a brief period working for the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming and an additional six years in Thailand, she retired to California at the age of 76. Many of the photos here depict people going about daily life, from washerwomen on the banks of the Tigris \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"mso-no-proof: yes;\"\u003eand vendors selling fruit in the market, to men performing religious ceremonies and Sheiks enjoying \"the famous Arab coffee.\" The photos also celebrate the architectural and archaeological splendors of the region, including the ruins of Babylon and Nineveh, and important monuments such as mosques, shrines, and tombs. Although we have been able to find little about the identity and career of this photographer, it seems likely that he ran a studio in Baghdad, where he would have catered to local residents as well as foreign travelers. The photos in this work would have undoubtedly appealed to western tourists, but they also reveal Kerim's firsthand familiarity with Iraqi landscapes and communities, resulting in images that are deeply intimate, resp\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"mso-no-proof: yes;\"\u003eectful, and authentic.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"mso-no-proof: yes;\"\u003eAt a time when most books about the region were the work of westerners publishing on travel, ethnography, and archaeology, the present work stands out as both a beautiful artistic production by a resident photographer, and an important visual record documenting a major period of transition from the fall of the Ottoman Empire to the early years of the modern Iraqi state. Over time and with each new version, however, the sculpture would take on new contexts and meanings. In 1932, following the dissolution of his romance with Lee Miller, Man Ray replaced the original eye with an image of Miller's eye and renamed it \"Object of Destruction.\" (This version was lost during WWII and replaced with a replica titled \"Lost Object\" in 1945.) The piece was literally destroyed in 1957 by a group of student protesters, prompting Man Ray to remake the piece yet again--this time in an edition of 100--which he dubbed \"Indestructible Object.\" Finally, in 1970, Man Ray authorized Luciano Anselmino of Galleria il Fauno to produce 40 metronomes with a slight alteration from earlier examples: each was outfitted with a lenticular image of an eye that appeared to \"wink\" with every stroke of the arm. Before opening his own studio, Berger was a member of Oregon Camera Club (he became its president in 1913), learned color photography techniques in New York, and spent time in Montana where he photographed landscapes and Native American subjects. According to the Buffalo Bill Center for the West, Red Belt (also known as Big Beaver) was one of the models for the artist's monumental bronze \"On the War Trail,\" commissioned in 1922 for the Civic Center in Denver, Colorado. Mountain Chief (ca. 1848-1942) was a particularly prominent figure. Most estimates put the population of bison in the American West in the tens of millions prior to the 1870s; by 1890, the animal was on the verge of extinction thanks to a mixture of habitat loss, aggressive hunting, and government policies aimed at disrupting indigenous peoples' food supply.
