Rooted in Inequality
(BROADSIDE). (SOCIAL JUSTICE). African-American Males: Endangered Species? ([Philadelphia]: N.p., 1978) Single sheet, printed on one side only. (352 x 277 mm.) Image is signed "D.C. / '78" in lower right corner. Excellent condition with only minor issues (faint thumb soiling, a couple scuffs to border, very slight edge wear).
A provocative broadside showing poor outcomes and high death rates that disproportionately affect African-American men.
Created to coincide with a conference hosted by Temple University on 24 June 1978, this broadside features the silhouetted profile of an African-American man's head under the image of a branching tree. The roots of the tree are labeled "racism" and "capitalism," with arrows pointing upward toward the trunk, marked "victim" and "acceptance of victim status." From the trunk, more arrows extend to the branches, which are labeled with various negative outcomes: highest infant mortality rate, cancer and smoking, accidental deaths, homicide, imprisonment, job and family concerns, self-hatred, inadequate education, gang violence, high blood pressure and related heart and kidney disease, and early childhood problems.
A rare piece. OCLC finds just three copies of this broadside, two of which are in the United States. (1047)
