The Body on Display
(HUMAN ANATOMY). (NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM). GREGORY, William K. and Marcelle ROIGNEAU. Introduction to Human Anatomy. Guide to Section I of the Hall of Natural History of Man. (New York: n.p., 1934) [ii], 82 pp. (248 x 172 mm.) First Edition. Original printed wrappers. With many in-text illustrations and photographic reproductions. Covers a bit toned and chipped (a little loss on spine and one corner), paper slightly rumpled from thumbing, but contents entirely clean.
An early illustrated guide to the American Museum of Natural History's exhibition on human anatomy, embracing evolutionary concepts "from Fish to Man."
On display from 1932-60, this exhibition included sections on what the human body is made of and how it works, comparative anatomy, embryology, the evolution of facial features, and the nervous system and brain. Despite this work's obvious scientific and educational approach to anatomy and evolution, a troubling note in the preface tells us that the exhibit opened in connection with the Third International Congress in Eugenics, held at the Natural History Museum in August, 1932.
