(MAGIC). A Small Archive of Material Collected by an Amateur Magician. (England: ca. 1940s) Light soiling, a couple small tears, and other mostly minor wear associated with use, many of the printed sheets with creases.
A wonderful collection of tricks and other media collected by a magic enthusiast during World War II, including two sets of handmade cards.
The collection includes:
- “Davenport’s Demon Telegraph,” no. 54 (London: L. Davenport & Co., April-October 1940). [16] pp. In original blue printed wrappers, stapled, as issued.
- “The Demon Telegraph,” no. 61 (London: L. Davenport & Co., January 1942). 20 pp. Stapled as issued.
- “Goldston’s Magical Quarterly” (London: Will Goldston Ltd., December 1939). [vi], [461]-474 pp. Original orange printed wrappers, stapled, as issued.
- Catalogue of “Novelties in Magic at Goldston’s.” [4] pp.
- 22 trick explanations printed on single sheets or bifolia, including one on the back of an envelope. Many with illustrations.
- Two props used for tricks: an envelope with the word “BANK” printed on the back, and an envelope full of folded tissue paper with either a bullseye or red, white, and blue stripes, along with a number of colored tissue strips.
- Two sets of handmade cards: 18 cards with hand-drawn line images, each measuring 138 x 88 mm.; and nine oversized cards measuring 224 x 173 mm. or slightly smaller, each hand-painted on at least one side. (1006)
