What Mozart, Henry VIII, and Isaac Newton Have in Common

(MEDICINE - ADVERTISING). ABESHOUSE, Benjamin S. A complete set of "Medical History" booklets. (Norwich, N.Y.: Eaton Laboratories, 1964-71)  15 volumes. (170  x 147 mm.)  Original illustrated paper wrappers, stapled as issued. Each booklet with color illustrations by a different artist.  A couple booklets with thumb soiling, one with a faint fold on front cover and another with light writing on the rear, two lacking folding advertisement. Minor issues, but in excellent condition overall.

A complete run of delightfully offbeat promotional booklets for a brand of UTI medications, with wonderful artwork.

Brought to you by Eaton Laboratories: makers of medications such as Macrodantin and Furadantin, "for today's treatment of urinary tract infection." According to the prefaces to these works, the texts are based on a manuscript written by Dr. Benjamin S. Abeshouse, "a practicing urologist whose lifetime avocation was the collection of historical data dealing with the influence of genitourinary disease in the lives of famous men and women." A different artist seems to have contributed to each booklet. Among our personal favorites are Sir Walter Scott, by an artist influenced equally by LSD and Klimt; and Lord Byron, with illustrations that lie somewhere between Erté and Edward Gorey.

The booklets include:

1. Benjamin Franklin (1964)

2. Napoleon Bonaparte (1964)

3. Louis Napoleon (1964)

4. Samuel Pepys (1965)

5. Lord Byron (1965)

6. Samuel Johnson (1965)

7. W. A. Mozart (1966)

8. Sir Arthur Sullivan (1966)

9. John Paul Jones (1966)

10. Marquis de La Fayette (1968)

11. Woodrow Wilson (1969)

12. Henry VIII (1970)

13. Sir Walter Scott (1970)

14. General John Pershing (1971)

15. Isaac Newton (1971)
