Consisting of 17 original works made by 25 artists, this collection showcases a variety of photographic techniques, handmade papers, and creative processes exploring intersections of light, chemistry, and fiber. While a few artists created their images using modern methods, most chose 19th century technology such as cyanotype, platinum printing, and Van Dyke. Central to each piece is the handmade paper substrate, which include a wide array of materials from old hospital uniforms and workers coveralls, to fine paper sourced from traditional mills. Experimental by nature, the resulting photographic prints are engaging, thoughtful explorations that challenge the conventional boundaries of both media. Accompanying this portfolio is an introductory essay by Professor John Risseeuw of Arizona State University, as well as artists' statements for each work. (1159)
